After 7 weeks, it didn't look like this team would be among those to
contend for the championship. Best had just lost to Talbot. In fact the
two worse teams in the league, CZ and Talbot had one win each, both over Best.
However before that game, Best made a move that would change his season.
The season opened with a 58-42 win over Stroupe. All was not well, however,
QB Vinny Testeverde was lost for the season with a torn Achilles. In week
2, Best lost 25-8 to CZ. It was the only the second time in his BRFL career
that he failed to score a TD. In weeks 3 and 4, Best won gritty games over
Peil and Outlaw, but the Jets were not doing the job. Best picked up
Oakland, and tried an SR of Pittsburgh, but lost to JK and the Mo-ha. In week
6, Carolina QBs threw four TDs against San Francisco and Jackson, who SR'ed them,
cleaned up. Best beat Jackson to the claim. Best started Carolina in week
7, and they got inside the red zone five times, and tried to throw to
Wesley Walls each time. No scores resulted and Best lost to Talbot, then 0-6.
Another development about this time was a positive for Best. Jeff George
took over for Randall Cunningham in Minnesota and Cris Carter's numbers
started to improve. In week 8, Carter scored twice and Best was able to
eek out a 27-21 win over Barry. It was the last time Best would score
fewer than 45 points in a game. In week 9 it was old rival Wallace, and Best
was able to do what he usually does in winning 58-23. Carolina threw three
TDs in week 9, and Best started them in week 10 against Bud. He should have
started Oakland. Best lost 59-51. The loss left him two games behind Jackson
as divisional play returned.
In week 11, Best defeated Jackson 47-32 to gain a game. The next two weeks
Stroupe and CZ fell as Oakland and Carolina QBs scored three TDs. This set
up a week 14 matchup with Jackson for the West divison title. It was
no contest. Despite a tough matchup at Green Bay, Carolina QBs scored 25
points and Best cruised 52-8.
In the playoffs,
Peil was up first and Best jumped out to a huge lead on Carolina's 25 points
on Saturday. Peil made it respectable on Monday, 45-32. In week 16, Carolina's
offense bogged down in a snowstorm, but other players stepped up for Best.
Cris Carter made a dramatic return from an injury and Best won 56-43. Deitrich
was up next. Best had incredible matchups as Carolina needed to score as
many points as possible. Bud was not shy about remaking his team to try and
win. He dropped his Washington QBs and picked up Atlanta. To counter, Best
picked back up Atlanta WR Tim Dwight. Best got 31 points from Carolina and
iced the cake as Dwight kept Bud at bay with 22 points and Best had his
second championship with a record setting 79-48 win.
